For the last 7 years, the Timberman Triathlon Festival was the beginning of the end of my season. Each year, the Timberman marked my "A" race as I worked towards this season ending event.
No offense to any other races, but everything after the Timberman was anti-climatic. I think this was for a few reasons. First, the Timberman is only 8 miles from my home. Next, the event was my first every triathlon back in 2000, so it created the triathlon snob that I am today. Finally, the event is so big and so well run, that it is hard not to get excited it.
This year, however, I did not participate. Coming off of Ironman Lake Placid, I felt I could have done the Sprint on Saturday. I didn't want to push myself into a race that I felt I couldn't give it my all. Instead, I opted to volunteer both days.
I have volunteered at the Timberman every year since 2002, mostly with the Granite State Triathlon Club. This year, we had over 30 members race and another 30 volunteer. I had a chance to watch and support many of our GSTC members while still being able to cheer for all other triathletes. Catching up with fellow athletes, members and friends was a great experience. I took over 100 pictures during the weekend, mostly of GSTC members, but also of the pros and some friends.
The Timberman got me excited to race again, but I have made the decision to shut it down until next year. I go back to work soon, money is tight and I just don't have the time to get in the proper training needed to enjoy another event.
By shutting it down, this means I am back in the weight room and beginning my run focus. I hope to do a marathon in October and claim a valuable Boston Marathon spot. I'm easing my way back into and trying to enjoy running again.
But...time will tell.
I know this looks A LOT like me, but it's actually Andy Potts
